Trim Healthy Mama: The Good Life

Trim Healthy Mama, or THM, is a way of life that focuses on eating healthy while losing, or maintaining, a healthy weight. The core of it is to separate carbs from fats and stay away from sugar. This is difficult in the culture we live in as almost every food we buy contains some form of sugar: high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, sucrose, etc. These spike insulin levels and the result is your body storing the fats and carbs you eat in your fat cells because it uses the insulin for energy instead. This is also what causes the infamous "sugar crash".

I started the THM way of life on January 1, 2020. Now, I am far from perfect as I am human, just like the rest of us, and I did cheat and not stay on plan 100% of the time. I also live on a tight food budget, partially by choice, but also because it is expensive to feed 6 hungry mouths! Alaska isn't cheap. Healthy food isn't cheap. Combined, you have an expensive bill to pick up! But I didn't want the stress for my family of having a larger grocery bill that I had before. So I researched. This blog will be the results of my research and my time of putting together things that work for a family of two to six, as that's how my family budgets. I typically try to keep groceries under or around $400 a month. Yes, this is feasible! I promise! But with budgeting, there comes sacrifice, willpower, and being willing to do the "hard stuff".

There are days when I don't want to cook. I started this journey exhausted, worn out, and overwhelmed by all the information available about the THM life. S, E, FP, sweeteners...all of it was over my head! But it doesn't have to be! I didn't give up many delicious foods - in fact, I've gained more delicious recipes under my belt to compensate for the ones I "lost"! Ok, ok. Enough of my rambles. You are probably wondering what in the world is an S? What's an E and FP?

An S meal is high in fats and low in carbs. That is why the authors of Trim Healthy Mama call this a Satisfying meal. Because they are so good! Think cheese, bacon, and thick, creamy soups! The comfort foods! That's an S.

An E meal is high in carbs and low in fats. This what the authors call an Energizing meal. These meals give you energy to keep pumping through the day. They won't necessarily fill you up and sometimes you may still feel hungry afterwards, so that's why we have:

FP which stands for Fuel Pull. These can be drinks, snacks, desserts, or really anything that have less than 5g in both carbs and fats. They focus only on proteins to fill you up.

Now you're probably wondering, "How in the world do I keep all this straight?!" You now understand why I was so overwhelmed. Take it one meal at a time. I started with breakfast, because that was easiest for me. Usually, I always have an S for breakfast, but the authors do have some really awesome E breakfasts too! My favorite is called Blueberry Cottage which is found in their first book: Trim Healthy Mama Plan. It's also filling which was a bonus in my book! (Also my youngest loved it!)

So that's the basics of the THM life! I'm enjoying this journey and I'm glad you're here along for the ride! Maybe you'll enjoy it so much you'll even consider joining in!
